'Water and electricity do not mix.' Staying safe when storms knock out power

Severe weather can create unexpected dangers in your home. From electrical hazards to generator risks, are you prepared?

Severe weather, like ice storms and heavy rain, can cause significant flooding and power outages, creating serious risks within your home.

During the early spring season, the ground is still frozen, and the water will not absorb into the earth, elevating the flood threat as it easily pools on roadways, and sometimes finds ways to seep into your home.

"Water and electricity do not mix," warns Steve Nelson, General Manager with the Electrical Safety Authority.

But there are ways homeowners can be proactive when severe weather hits.

"What you can do is make sure your electrical equipment that you have plugged in, such as TVs, gaming systems, fans, anything that you would have plugged in, if you can remove it and, or elevate it above two feet," Nelson says. "This way if your electrical system is compromised, you're not losing your devices."

Residents are urged to avoid entering the basement area if water is above electrical outlets, baseboard heaters, furnaces, or near the electrical panel. It's recommended to check for outside damage as well, but to remain a safe distance as electricity can travel through the ground.

"You should stay at least 10 metres back, which is roughly the size of a school bus,” adds Nelson.

It’s the same advice in the event of downed power lines, which can be reported by calling emergency services.

A portable, backup generator is great to have, but it can be dangerous if you don’t place it outside and away from windows. Generators can give off a lot of carbon monoxide, which can be very toxic if entered into the home.
