6-metre-tall waves wash out wedding, damage buildings in Hawaii

Several roads and buildings were damanged as a result of the 'historic' waves.

Remnants of Tropical Storm Darby churned up enormous waves in Hawaii over the weekend, with footage showing walls of water clearing the rooftops of two-story condos in Keauhou Saturday.

Dillon and Riley Murphy were celebrating their wedding in the area when a giant wave crashed ashore, washing out the reception.

Thankfully, nobody was injured, and the food and cake were unscathed, the couple told CNN in an interview.

Elsewhere, several buildings and roads sustained damage in what the National Weather Service characterized as “historic south swell.”

The waves – some as high as 6 metres – peaked Saturday night, with hazardous surf conditions persisting into Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Darby formed May 28, rapidly intensifying into a hurricane. It was the second major hurricane of the 2022 Pacific season and, with maximum winds reaching 220 km/h, the first to reach Category status. Darby dissipated and returned to a tropical storm last week.
