The storm is expected to hit Ireland Thursday.
Hurricane Lorenzo brought strong waves to the Portuguese island of Terceira Wednesday, with wind gusts up to 130 kilometres per hour.
Footage posted to Facebook shows rough seas hitting Terceira Wednesday morning as authorities closed roads, schools and non-emergency public services.
So far, there have been no reports of major structural damage, but 38 year-old resident Carlos Garcia told Reuters the shoreline is "destroyed." Regional government said more than 50 people had to be relocated.
Lorenzo will move out of the area through Wednesday and head toward Ireland for Thursday.
By then, it is expected to be a strong extra-tropical cyclone.
