Toronto braces for one of its coldest April days as temperatures drop

A shot of Arctic air moving across southern Ontario Tuesday could give Toronto one of its chilliest April days on record

April's wintry side will continue to show off in southern Ontario on Tuesday, with temperatures set to drop considerably--potentially enough to rank as one of the coldest April days for Toronto, Ont.

Tuesday will be one of the coolest April days Toronto has experienced. The cold will be felt in the early-morning period, with a temperature of -6°C and a wind chill of -15 in the city.

It won't warm up much more at the peak of the day, either. The projected high for Toronto airport is -1°C––the coldest since March 2. That would be Toronto's coldest April daytime high since 2016, 2007 and 2003. Normally, Toronto would be sitting at 10°C at this time of the year.

What will be helping to drive the cold will be strong, northwesterly wind gusts of 50-60+ km/h, leading to winter-like wind chills to return. As cold as that is, it will be much colder north and east of the city––wind chills of near -20 are expected.

In fact, to make it seem worse, the Arctic Circle will be milder than Toronto on Tuesday, as well as other Ontario locales such as Hamilton, Ottawa, and Sault Ste. Marie. Yellowknife, N.W.T., will be sitting at 5°C while Dawson City, Yukon, has a projected temperature of 8°C.

It will also be a dangerously cold morning for those still without power still from the late-March ice storm. As of Monday, April 7, more than 40,000 people (related and unrelated) in the province are still without electricity, according to Hydro One.

"Restoration in the hardest-hit areas will continue into this week. For remote areas, including customers who can only be reached by water, restoration may take longer," said Hydro One in an April 7 update on its website.

The cold weather won't be staying long, however. It relaxes Wednesday, but more wintry weather may be on the way. Another bout of a rain-snow mix is coming Thursday in southern and eastern Ontario, as a low-pressure system tracks just south of the region.
