Potent freezing rain, flood risk making its way to Atlantic Canada

Beware slick roads and sidewalks Sunday night into Monday as freezing rain builds across much of the Maritimes

Atlantic Canada will find itself in the path of a dynamic springtime storm sweeping the eastern half of the country.

After producing damaging ice accretions in Ontario, the system will push east with an ice threat that’ll transition to heavy rainfall.

Residents should prepare for slick driving conditions early Monday, with a potential washout arriving for many areas on Tuesday.

Atlantic Canada precipitation predawn Monday

Folks across New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island can expect the most organized freezing rain. A glaze of ice around Fredericton, Moncton, and Charlottetown will leave exposed surfaces slick for pedestrians and motorists alike. Use extra caution while heading out Sunday night and Monday morning.

The wintry mix will arrive across western and central Newfoundland by Monday afternoon and evening, bringing snow, ice pellets, and freezing rain to the region before precipitation transitions to plain rain by early Tuesday.

Any wintry precipitation that sticks in the Maritimes won’t stick around for long. Southerly winds whipping in behind the warm front will send temperatures rising in a hurry through the day Monday, with plain rain throughout the Maritimes by Monday evening.

Heavy rain arrives Tuesday

A slug of moisture pushing in from the south will collide with a stationary boundary hanging over the southern Maritimes, setting up a heavy rain threat across the region, including Halifax. Expect heavy rainfall throughout the day across southern sections of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Some areas could see 50+ mm of rain from this soaker as it slides through the area. However, forecasters currently have low confidence on exactly where this bullseye of heaviest precipitation will set up.
